The short version: NCL invented "Freestyle Cruising" — no set dining times, no assigned tables, no dress codes — and if that sounds like how a vacation should work, you'll love it. NCL is also the answer to two questions no other line can touch: "how do solo travelers cruise without paying double?" and "how do we see four Hawaiian islands in a week?" We've sailed NCL and completed their agent training; here's the honest guide.
Book NCL if you…
- Hate fixed schedules — eat when hungry, dress how you like
- Want Hawaii, island-hopping style (keep reading)
- Are a solo traveler — NCL's studio cabins are the industry's best solo deal
- Love entertainment — full Broadway productions at sea
- Want ship-within-a-ship luxury — The Haven — without a luxury-line fare
Pick another line if you…
- Love the tradition of the same table and waiter every night — Princess does that beautifully
- Want the rock-bottom fare with no add-ons pitched — Carnival keeps it simpler
- Need the mega-waterpark scale for teens — that's Royal's Icon class
- Want adults-only guaranteed — Virgin Voyages
Pride of America: The Hawaii Cruise That Breaks the Rules
Every other Hawaii cruise sails round-trip from the West Coast — 15 days, with 8–10 of them crossing open ocean. Pride of America is the only cruise ship based in Hawaii year-round, and it changes everything:
- 4 islands in 7 days — Oahu, Maui, the Big Island (two ports), and Kauai
- Zero sea days — a new port basically every day
- Overnights in Maui and Kauai — evenings ashore, luaus, sunrise excursions
- No passport needed for U.S. citizens — it never leaves Hawaii
We've explored these islands ourselves and this is the itinerary we recommend for first-time Hawaii visitors who want to see it all — pair it with a few Waikiki beach days before or after and it's the perfect trip. See our Hawaii guide for what we loved on each island.
The Rest of the Fleet
Prima Class THE NEW WAVE
Norwegian Prima (2022), Viva (2023), Aqua (2025)
NCL's newest and most upscale ships — sleek design, the Ocean Boulevard wraparound promenade with infinity pools, upscale food halls, and go-kart racing on the top deck (really). Aqua added a hybrid rollercoaster-waterslide. Smaller than the mega-ships at ~3,100–3,600 guests, which keeps them feeling stylish rather than crowded.
Best for: couples and design-minded cruisers who want NCL's newest hardware
Breakaway & Breakaway-Plus Class THE CROWD PLEASERS
Breakaway, Getaway, Escape, Joy, Bliss, Encore
The heart of the fleet: ~4,000-guest ships with waterslides, race tracks (Joy, Bliss, Encore), big Broadway shows, and the full Freestyle dining spread of 20+ venues. Bliss and Joy were practically built for the Alaska run — the Observation Lounge is glacier-viewing done right.
Best for: families and groups — and our pick for NCL Alaska sailings
The Mid-Size Fleet PORT COLLECTORS
Jewel, Gem, Pearl, Jade, Dawn, Star, Sun, Sky, Spirit
NCL's smaller, older ships trade waterslides for itineraries: Panama Canal, Greek Isles port-a-day runs, South America, and other routes the big ships skip. Fares run gentle, and the smaller scale suits travelers who cruise for the map, not the ship.
Best for: destination-first cruisers and interesting-itinerary hunters
The Haven SHIP-WITHIN-A-SHIP
Available on most larger NCL ships
Not a ship class but worth its own card: The Haven is NCL's gated suite complex — private pool, sundeck, restaurant, butler service, and keycard-only access, perched atop an otherwise lively ship. Luxury-line seclusion, big-ship entertainment downstairs. One of cruising's best havens (sorry) for multigenerational groups: suite life for the adults, waterslides for the kids.
Best for: celebrations, luxury seekers, and "best of both worlds" families
What's Included vs. What Costs Extra
- Included: main dining rooms, buffet, several casual venues, entertainment (including the Broadway shows), pools, and kids' clubs.
- Extra: alcohol, WiFi, specialty restaurants, excursions, gratuities — but NCL's "More at Sea" promo bundles most of that (drinks, WiFi, dining credits, excursion credits) into the fare, often at a steep discount. The catch: service charges on the included packages add up, so the advertised fare isn't the real total. We always quote you the true bottom line — it's the #1 thing that surprises people who book NCL direct.
- Loyalty: Latitudes Rewards — give us your number and every booking counts.
Picking Your Cabin
- Studios — solo cabins priced for one, with access to a private solo-travelers lounge. If you're cruising alone, nobody else comes close.
- Balcony — essential for Alaska and Hawaii; on Pride of America, we'll aim you at the side facing the Nāpali Coast sail-by (trust us on this one).
- Club Balcony Suite — the value step-up: more room, better bathroom, a few perks, well under Haven prices.
- The Haven — see above; book early, it sells out first.
- Classic mistakes: under the pool deck or race track (yes, you can hear the go-karts), or adjoining-door cabins if you're a light sleeper.

Do I need a passport for the Hawaii cruise?
U.S. citizens don't — Pride of America never leaves Hawaii, so a government photo ID does it. One of the only bucket-list cruises with no passport required. (Non-U.S. citizens: ask us about documentation.)
What makes Pride of America different from other Hawaii cruises?
It's the only ship sailing Hawaii year-round from Honolulu: 4 islands, 7 days, zero sea days, overnights in Maui and Kauai. Everything else sails from the West Coast with 8–10 days at sea. (Princess's West Coast version is the right pick if you hate flying — see our Princess guide.)
What does "Freestyle Cruising" actually mean?
No assigned dining times, no assigned tables, no dress codes. Show up hungry, sit where you like, wear what you want. NCL built the whole fleet around it.
Is "More at Sea" worth it?
Often yes — the bundle is heavily discounted in promos. But the service charges on included items mean the sticker fare isn't the real total. We quote the true bottom line up front, which is exactly where booking direct trips people up.
Does booking through you cost more than booking direct?
No — same price or better. NCL pays us, not you. We've sailed the line, done their training, and we track their ever-changing promos so you don't have to.
